First Dental Visit
Oral Hygiene and Preventive Dental Care
Visiting the dentist every six months for regular checkups and teeth cleanings is an essential part of maintaining strong teeth and a healthy smile. Practicing good oral hygiene with twice-daily brushing and flossing can brighten your smile, prevent cavities and halt the progression of gum disease.
Preventive dental care such as regular checkups, cleanings and x-rays can also help to improve your overall health and wellness and avoid costly and uncomfortable dental problems down the road. At Dentalcare Associates in Scotch Plains, we believe that preventive care and education are keys to optimal oral health. Our caring and knowledgeable staff is dedicated to serving all of your dental care needs.
Your First Dental Visit
During your first dental visit, one of our experienced dentists will review your dental and medical history with you. He or she will perform a comprehensive oral examination that includes checking your teeth and mouth for decay, cavities, gum disease and any abnormalities. The dentist will also perform an oral cancer screening and take note of existing dental work, missing teeth, cavities and fractures.
In addition, at your first dental visit we will most likely take X-rays, which can diagnose problems such as impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts, bone loss and decay between the teeth. The dentist will review your x-rays and discuss dental treatment recommendations and options. He or she will address any questions or concerns you may have and work with you to create a customized treatment plan designed to fit your individual needs.
Professional dental cleanings are usually performed by one of our highly-trained dental hygienists. The hygienist will use special dental instruments to remove the calculus (tartar) and plaque from your teeth. He or she will then polish your teeth to remove any additional plaque and stains; leaving your mouth looking and feeling squeaky clean!
